Program Notes:

For this concert, we trace back to our roots. Whether you are encompassed by Copland’s transcendent orchestral suite or roused by the marvelous musical color of the banjo, this program truly paints a picturesque dreamscape of Appalachian nostalgia. The scene opens with Lincoln Highway Suite by Spartanburg’s own Nolan Stolz. Stolz composed this piece as a toast to the 100th anniversary of the historic Lincoln Highway. This was one of America’s first transcontinental highways, which connected New York to San Francisco, surely aiding in the fulfillment of many young Americans’ aspirations.

Aaron Copland’s famous Appalachian Spring Suite follows, evoking images of fruited plains and a sense of hope drenched in ambition. In conclusion, Spartanburg Philharmonic will host the incomparable, GRAMMY award winning, and world-renowned banjo player, Béla Fleck. Following a performance with Bluegrass Spartanburg, Béla Fleck will join the symphony on stage for an awe-inspiring performance of his Juno Concerto. Join us in our pursuit for this musical American Dream!
